You may have noticed some areas of brown grass at Discovery Well Park. Over the past few months, the City has been working hard to maintain and repair underground sewer and storm drain lines buried below the turf area at the park. These activities required the City to turn off the irrigation system, causing areas of the turf to die out. Because the park is built atop an oilfield with unique soil conditions, maintaining green turf requires watering levels beyond what is currently allowed under state and local water conservation regulations. During this transition time, the Public Works Department and Community Services Department are evaluating alternatives for the turf area that require less irrigation and are appropriate for the current uses of the park. The Sustainable City Committee and the Parks & Recreation Commission will be involved in this process. We thank you for your patience as we work toward an environmentally sustainable solution to the brown grass. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the Public Works Department at (562) 989-7356.
