Question of the Week: How do I arrange pickup of my unwanted large/bulky household items?

March 14 Question of the Week: How do I arrange pickup of my unwanted large/bulky household items?

Answer: City residents are provided two free bulky item collections a year on their regular collection day. Up to four bulky items may be placed alongside trash and recycle bins. Contact EDCO at 562-597-0608 to schedule your free pickup. You will need to provide the number of items, a description and the address for pickup. Additionally, the City and EDCO are sponsoring Spring 2018 Bulky Item Clean-Up Week from May 14th - May 18th. During this week, Signal Hill single-family residences can set out bulky items at the curb for collection on their regularly scheduled collection day, free of charge. Residents in multi-family complexes should call EDCO to arrange for a special pick-up. Click here for more details.

Bulky items include any household goods, such as washers and dryers, furniture, mattresses, and old television sets. For a complete list of accepted bulky items, please contact EDCO at 562-597-0608.

March 7 Question of the Week: How do I stay up-to-date on emergency information and alerts from the City?

February 28 Question of the Week: How do I set up new water service and pay my water bill?

If you are a Signal Hill resident and you need to open an account for new water service, you must do so in person at City Hall. Visit the Finance Department counter on the main floor at 2175 Cherry Avenue during weekday business hours.

Once your account is set up, you can pay your bill online with a credit card, by sending a check in the mail, or in person at City Hall with cash, check or credit card. Please note that payment is due by the 20th of each month to avoid a discontinuation in service.

February 21:
We’re excited to introduce our new series - Question of the Week. Every Wednesday we will answer a frequently-asked question about working, living and playing in Signal Hill. We will also be posting our Question of the Week on our Facebook page, @cityofsignalhill. If you'd like to submit a question, please e-mail us at social@cityofsignalhill.org.

Our first Question of the Week is: What do I need to do if I want to have a garage sale?

Answer: Spring cleaning season is upon us, and a garage sale is an excellent way to get rid of unwanted items and make some extra money. Yes, you do need a permit to have a garage sale in Signal Hill. Each address can have up to 3 garage sales per calendar year. The fee (per sale) is $20 for a maximum of two consecutive days. You can find the application here.

The completed application payment must be submitted in-person at City Hall, at the Planning Counter on the lower level, on weekdays during regular business hours. The City does not currently accept online applications/payments for garage sale permits.

Permit must be conspicuously displayed on the premises where the garage sale is conducted, and presented upon request to an enforcement officer.

The City does ask that you follow these guidelines when holding a garage sale:
  • Advise your neighbors that you are planning to have a garage sale.
  • Start and end at reasonable times. Recommended times are from 7:00 a.m.
  • to 3:00 p.m.
  • Remove ALL signs posted following the event.
  • Do not place sale items on the sidewalk, parkway or street.
  • Please do not sell new items.
  • Park your cars elsewhere so that your customers can park in front of your property. Monitor your patrons and discourage them from double-parking or from blocking your neighbor’s driveways.
  • No loud music.
  • For large item pickup such as sofas and refrigerators that didn’t sell, please contact EDCO at (562) 597-0608. Large items may not be left out. You are responsible for assuring that they are picked up and disposed of properly.
